Review

This revised edition of Great Getaways (a collection of the author’s
weekly Globe and Mail “Day Tripper” columns) is basically a reprint
of the 1992 edition, with a new section for kids.

The guide divides Southern Ontario into 22 sections, with trips
arranged by theme (e.g., a “Tasty Trips” section includes a tour of
a Niagara winery). Each trip is described in two or three pages, which
include simple directions on how to get there, a map reference, and a
telephone number for those seeking more detailed information. The book
also includes “A Calendar of Special Events” and a useful index,
arranged by subject and place. The new feature, “Kids Picks” will
appeal to children. Here the trips feature such well-known tourist
attractions as Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, the Children’s Museum in
London, and the Port Stanley Terminal Rail. The guide’s over-size
format make it easy to use. All daytrippers will need is a good road
map.
