Review

From copyright and simultaneous submissions to consumer magazines and
literary journals, this useful guide covers issues of interest to both
beginning writers and those who are more experienced. One can’t expect
all of the information to be up-to-date, especially with respect to the
kinds of material publishers are accepting. After this book went to
press, government cutbacks forced a number of publishers to either
completely eliminate some genres or drastically cut their lists. That
said, writers still need a compendium of contacts and addresses, and The
Canadian Writer’s Market provides it.

Deliberately omitted are educational publishers, publishers that
specialize in poetry, and non-English-language publishers. Although the
authors say that they have included “many of the smaller
English-language trade publishers,” Quintin, a small but fairly
well-known children’s book publisher, isn’t mentioned. And missing
from the “Writers’ Organizations and Support Agencies” section is
CWILL B.C. (Children’s Writers and Illustrators of B.C.). Despite
these omissions, writers who want to market their work would do well to
obtain a copy of this book.
