Review

This well-written book is a reference for boaters who wish to cruise
between Ottawa and Hull on the Ottawa River and Notre-Dame-du-Nord at
the north end of Lake Timiskaming, a distance of 441 kilometres. The
recent installation of four “bypasses” has made it possible for a
small boat to travel this entire distance. Each bypass consists of a
tractor and a special boat trailer that move the boats between launching
ramps above and below the several rapids or dams. In addition, each
bypass accommodates boats up to 10.3 metres in length and operates
between early June and mid-September. The author reviews the history of
the Ottawa River, examines navigation charts for various sections of the
river, and provides safety tips and other practical information (e.g.,
where to shop and where to dock at night). This guide is a must for its
intended audience.
