Review

This revised and expanded edition of Jennifer Bennett’s The
Harrowsmith Northern Gardener (1982) includes metric measurements, more
and better photographs, an updated text, source lists, user-friendly
tables, and a new chapter titled “Alphabetical Flowers.” The chapter
on container gardening includes a helpful new section on hanging
planters. Bennett points out in her introduction that gardens can be
beautiful as well as useful. The new photos show that ignoring the
traditional separation of flower and vegetable gardens can produce
glorious results.

The words and wisdom of more than a dozen earlier Canadian garden
writers are interspersed throughout this book, which remains the best of
its kind to appear thus far.
