Review

Mineral exploration and development is an integral component of the
Canadian economy, and for many Canadians a way of life. Paydirt captures
the spirit and pride of the mining sector from its origins in Canada
through to the contemporary era.

Charles Pelley’s upbeat text is richly illustrated with Iona
Wright’s photographs. The book’s geographical coverage ranges from
the Atlantic coast to the High Arctic, the Pacific coast, and all points
in between. Chapters focus on the history of mining, mining communities,
exploration and development, and the environment. The book’s purpose
is to counter critics of the industry and to celebrate the achievements
of one of the oldest and most established industries in the nation.

A coffee-table book, Paydirt will make a welcome gift to those involved
in Canada’s mining industry.
