Review
This companion volume to A History of the Austrian Migration to Canada
(edited by Frederick C. Englemann et al.) rounds out the picture of
Austrian immigration to Canada during the past century.
The first chapter in the book provides some valuable insights into
methodological issues relating to statistical analysis of ethnocultural
groups in Canada. Chapter 2 provides equally important insights into the
immigration flows and demographic patterns of Austrians in Canada during
the past century, while Chapter 3 focuses on the “push” and
“pull” factors that have shaped the patterns of Austrian immigration
to Canada. Subsequent chapters deal with a wide range of topics,
including the history of the Hutterites, a comparison of Austria and
Canada as satellites of dominant neighbors, the contribution of Austrian
immigrants to music in Canada, and the Austrian immigrant experience in
Canada. All in all, an interesting and well-written collection of
essays.
