Review

This anthology of short detective fiction combines previously published
stories and stories written specially for the collection. The authors
represented include Josef Skvorecky, Betsy Struthers, and Medora Sale,
among others.

A thoroughly referenced discussion of female detectives prefaces the
stories, which span close to a century. They are a mixed bag. Two in
particular—one involving a pet and the other a jury—suffer from a
heavy-handed dénouement.

All in all, Investigating Women makes for good, if not entirely
absorbing, reading.
