Review

Set in contemporary Ireland, this love story chronicles the unlikely
relationship between a brilliant and charming alcoholic and the
all-forgiving woman who loves him. While Malcolm Lowry in Under the
Volcano sought to understand how an intelligent and gifted man could
wilfully self-destruct, Slater is more concerned with exploring the
psychology of the codependent—in this case, the woman, who carries her
attachment to her alcoholic husband beyond all reasonable expectations.
A well-written and compelling story, populated with ordinary people
confronted with extraordinary circumstances.
