Review

Set in the Canadian Department of National Defence base at Lahr,
Germany, Leona Gom’s latest novel combines racism, political
extremism, drug dealing, homophobia, and murder.

Vicky Bauer is a Métis from Alberta, married for 20 years to the
teacher who took her under his wing when she was a teenager and
beginning to follow in her alcoholic mother’s footsteps. Currently a
graduate student in film studies, Vicky has followed her husband to
Germany, where he has accepted a teaching post with the armed forces.
While taking a walk in the forest one day, she witnesses a murder. By
the time the police arrive, the body is missing. As the novel unfolds
and more mysteries develop, Vicky’s life appears to be in danger and a
harrowing struggle ensues, leading to another murder before the story
races to its surprise dénouement.

Well-developed characters, believable dialogue, and an intricate
structure will keep readers engrossed in this fast-paced and sometimes
disturbing mystery.
