Review

This quirky first novel by Maureen Foss features the picaresque
adventures of a mother and daughter. As the story opens, Edith is
driving her mother, Dixie, from Vancouver to Manitoba for her sister
Queenie’s 65th-birthday party. Over the course of the journey, they
dine with an engaging cross dresser, Dixie falls for an aging motorhome
driver, and Edith slowly learns to loosen up. Suspense, humor, and a
cast of diverse characters make for an interesting narrative. Perhaps
even more impressive is the author’s mature and convincing treatment
of the mother/daughter relationship.
