Review

Canadian pop artist and fishing enthusiast Dennis Tourbin has decided to
reproduce his fishing journals in a series of four books, beginning with
this volume, which contains entries made in 1978. The journals are
presented here in facsimile format, with Tourbin’s drawings of lures
and hooks, as well as photo-reproductions of fish and friends. The
book’s jacket presents the volume as “a guide [to] and an
appreciation of this wonderfully addictive sport, which Tourbin
practices whenever and wherever the opportunity arises,” but unless
you are fond of handwritten journals and personal reminiscences, there
are guides more “authoritative” and appreciations more interesting
that are widely available. Charles Lynch’s Fishing with Simon, Karl
Bruhn’s Best of B.C. Lake Fishing, and Bill MacDonald’s Trout Tales
and Salmon Stories are recent contributions to the sport that, though
less quirky, are well worth considering.
