Review

These selected essays by art critic James D. Campbell exhibit a style
and vocabulary that is as energetic and vigorous as the art he
describes. Contemporary art can be intimidating to many viewers.
Campbell helps to bridge the gap between art and viewer by providing a
context for the artwork, by discussing technique in a straightforward
fashion, and by encouraging viewers to enjoy a work of art before
attempting to understand it on an intellectual level. At a time when
funding for the visual arts (and their related institutions) is under
increasing attack, Depth Markers serves as an important reminder of the
value of the visual arts to Canadian culture and

of the urgent need for continued funding and support.
