Review
This anthology of Alden Nowlan’s Telegraph–Journal columns reveals a
man who delighted in the idiosyncratic and absurd, and who celebrated
the foibles that afflict us all. Blending humor, compassion, and keen
observation, these columns bring the reader into intimate connection
with Nowlan, his family, and his cats. Unfortunately, Nowlan’s growth
as a writer is not easily traced, because the columns are arranged by
theme rather than chronologically. This criticism notwithstanding,
future volumes of the writer’s columns are eagerly anticipated.
