Review

Sports journalist Kerry Banks has written trivia books on both baseball
and hockey. In The Babe Ruth Era, he takes the career years
(1920–1945) of the Great Bambino, Babe Ruth, as the focus of his
puzzles and questions. Included are enough obscure facts and figures to
challenge even the most dedicated baseball historian.

“On January 3, 1920, the Boston Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the New
York Yankees and baseball changed forever,” says Banks in his preface.
What follows are eight sections of multiple-choice questions: Clearing
the Bases, The Guns of Summer, Kings of the Hill, Milestones,
Murderers’ Row and the G Men, Bound for Cooperstown, Outside the
Lines, and The Series. Matching and true-or-false sections round out the
chapters. A thorough explanation is provided for the correct answer to
each question.

Interspersed throughout are short exercises on memorable quotes,
nicknames, keystone combos, fabulous feats, and great pretenders—all
pertaining to the post-World War I to Cold War era. Supporting photos,
vignettes, and anecdotes add to the atmosphere.

The Babe Ruth Era is a delightful way of presenting a remarkable
baseball period.
