Review

This interesting volume describes the emigration to Canada of two Polish
families—the Kojder family of Saskatchewan and the Deputat family of
Ontario. What is immediately striking about both families is their
resourcefulness and ability to adapt to changing environments. The
Kojder family saga centres on strong, resilient females whose values
were passed down from generation to generation and now provide
inspiration for the author, who is driven not only to succeed in Canada
but also to seek her cultural roots in Poland. The Deputat family story
begins with Mieczyslaw Deputat, who emigrated to Canada in 1928 at the
age of 20. Despite tremendous obstacles and challenges, Deputat managed
not only to survive, but to flourish. His descendants, by contrast, are
more assimilated and less motivated to search for, or see the value of,
their historical roots.
