Review

The failure of Marypat Zitzer and Alan Kesselheim to conceive is
threatening their marriage. Determined to salvage their relationship,
they plan a canoeing expedition that will last for more than a year.
Their adventure begins at Grand Cache, Alberta, on the Smoky River. They
paddle up the Peace River to Lake Athabaska in northern Saskatchewan,
where they spend a long and bitterly cold winter in a small cabin in a
deserted fishing camp. It is here that Marypat discovers she is
pregnant. When spring thaw arrives, Marypat feels well enough to insist
that they complete their journey into the Northwest Territories, even
though medical assistance will be unavailable. On this final lap of
their expedition into the Far North, many hardships and dangers await.

This true-adventure tale combines heart-stopping suspense, emotional
turmoil, humor, and a powerful appreciation of nature and of the
traditions of the northern peoples. Marypat’s superb color photos are
an added bonus.
