Review

This volume completes the Place Names of Alberta set. The geographic
area covered by Volume 4 extends north from the Athabasca River and the
mountains to the Northwest Territories border.

Editor Merrily Aubrey has done an excellent job of locating and
describing the place names in this least-populated part of the province,
where many of the names are of Native origin and not well documented.
She has maintained the format and layout of the previous three volumes,
but has increased the depth of description to include more of the
interesting peripheral details as well as historical information, which
was not previously accessible.

Aubrey’s introduction to this volume displays her obvious love of
toponymy and history as she details the broad themes and trends evident
in the place names of northern Alberta.

Libraries holding the earlier volumes or collections on either Native
people or the North will want to purchase this volume.
