Review

Anyone planning to explore New Brunswick on foot should save some room
in his or her backpack for a copy of this guide. The book focuses on
where to hike in New Brunswick and what to expect to find on the trails.
Hikers are advised to read the introduction before setting out, because
it provides useful information about the trail maps, explains how a
trail’s degree of difficulty was derived, suggests equipment to take
along, and advises on wilderness etiquette.

The approximately 90 hiking trails have been grouped according to
region: St. John River Valley, Fundy Coast, Fundy National Park, Eastern
Shores, and Appalachian Highlands. This completely updated second
edition includes trails on the new Fundy Footpath. A useful “Trails at
a Glance” section names each trail and indicates its degree of
difficulty and distance. Multi-use trails are not included.

The book is structured around the five regions. Each chapter contains a
brief overview of the region’s history and geography, a regional map
locating the trails, and some black-and-white photographs. Individual
trail entries include a map; a thumbnail description; notations on
length, hiking time, type (loop or linear), difficulty, and ascent;
topographic map number; and trail condition when hiked. Further details
are given regarding access to the trail, markings, and trail features.
