Review

Although the 10-chapter format of this classic resource for Canadian
writers has remained unchanged for many years, much of the content has
been revised since the 11th edition to reflect the latest fluxes in this
highly changeable business.

The bulk of the book consists of Canadian contact names and mailing
addresses of potential customers for Canadian writing. The markets that
do appear in this book are neatly subdivided into chapters entitled
“Consumer Magazines,” “Literary and Scholarly,” “Trade,
Business and Farm Professional Publications,” “Daily Newspapers,”
and “Book Publishers.” Other chapters that focus on related subjects
are “Literary Agents,” “Awards, Grants and Competitions,” and
“Writer’s Organizations and Support Agencies.”

Like its predecessors, this edition suffers slightly from trying to be
all things to all writers. Besides mailing lists, there are also short
chapters on Canadian copyright law, libel, and even income tax breaks,
but the information provided is often too sketchy to be of much use to
someone facing a libel suit or tax audit. It should also be noted that
the markets listed are for the print medium only; writers who wish to
sell their skills to the television, film, stage, and radio industries
will have to seek another source. All that said, the guide is still an
invaluable tool for rookie wordsmiths who are not too proud to launch
their prose career with an article in Canada Poultryman or Small
Business Week. It may also save them the embarrassment of trying to sell
a farm article to Grain (a literary magazine) or a crafts article to
Hecate’s Loom (a magazine about witchcraft).
