Review

More than half a century has passed since the Canadian Social Science
Research Council and the Humanities Research Council of Canada founded
the Aid to Scholarly Publications Programme (ASPP). Designed to
encourage Canadian scholarship by subsidizing print runs, it has
published more than 3500 books since its establishment. It also awards
book prizes and publishes the book under review, which is intended for
both new and established scholarly authors.

This fifth bilingual edition of the Guide touches briefly on how to
find a publisher, how

to submit a book manuscript, the process of manuscript evaluation,
revisions, proofreading symbols, indexes, book production, publishing
costs, sales and promotion. The book does not address writing as a
craft. Nor, in its discussion of copyright and book contracts, does it
mention that authors who disagree with certain stipulations in their
contracts have the right to strike out and write in their preferences.
Most helpful is the “Publishers and University Presses” section,
which provides names and addresses, areas of interest, names of
contacts, and other pertinent information.
