Review

In this scholarly but accessible study of suicide, Toyomasa Fusé
reviews sociological, psychological, and biological approaches to
suicide. He also draws upon international research and reports in
constructing a multicultural view of his subject—a useful counterpoint
to the dominant Euro-American/Christian perspective. His examination of
the Japanese approach to death and suicide, for example, challenges the
reader to reflect on the exclusively psychological and individualistic
theories of suicide that prevail in the West. Fusé concludes his book
with a review of the major international approaches to suicide
prevention.

Suicide, Individual and Society is a valuable resource for
psychiatrists, psychologists, and other concerned professionals.
