Review

The author of this book vigorously contends that “generic
differentiation” still exists in today’s largely male-oriented
society and that it almost invariably operates to the detriment of
women. She locates her main support for this argument in linguistic
behavior, which she proceeds to illustrate and analyze in depth. An
intriguing question raised by this erudite and scrupulously documented
book is the extent to which gender bias would be eliminated if the same
pronoun were used to denote both sexes. At times we hear the voice of
the polemicist, but for the most part Ayim’s argument reflects a
careful marshaling of facts and the skills of a seasoned debater.
