Review

Robert Taylor is a professor of history at Brock University. This book
is an exhaustive account of the various 19th-century movements to
reconstruct and conserve medieval castles along the Rhine. Taylor traces
the esthetic, social, economic, and political forces that influenced
these movements. He also explicates the evolution of ideas concerning
the treatment of historic construction. His explanation includes very
detailed accounts of the treatment of specific structures along the
Rhine. He concludes by considering the more general lessons regarding
heritage structures that can be drawn from the German experience with
the castles of the Rhine.
