Review

The Six OmniGothic NeoFuturists are not science-fiction buffs, raging
postmoderns, or aspiring vampires, but rather a group of six mainstream
poets who meet to refine their craft in readings and workshops.

Jim Larwell writes from the perspective of a left-wing activist. This
is apparent in “Ottawa Valley Revival,” which compares poetry to
forestry and denounces outsiders who “Clearcut my culture ... float
’er away on / a balance sheet spring.” Craig Carpenter may be the
group’s most audacious member. His poem “Canada Oh Canada,” which
recalls Allen Ginsberg’s “America,” contains such topical jibes as
“The wealthy barber has cut your hair too short Canada.”

Michelle Desbarats alternates between intense observation and wry
commentary, while Sean Johnston produces minimalist verse, offbeat
narratives, and intriguing statements, such as “Each new day robs me
of my death / and takes my god from me.” Rocco Paoletti is a rooted
cosmopolitan who skilfully handles international and local subjects.
Malcolm Todd expresses populist concerns. “Montreal, 1996”
highlights the economic disparities found within the declining city.

This book reflects the successful collabor-ation of writers who have
developed their individual talents in collective settings.
