Review

This compilation of reports and statements provides a fascinating inside
look at the Canadian mental-health system and its effects on those it
treats. The system as experienced by the author and others makes for
gripping and disturbing reading. The book goes beyond cataloguing the
negative effects of conventional attempts to control, treat, and care
for those who are diagnosed as mentally ill to suggest less dehumanizing
ways of dealing with those experiencing mental and emotional distress.
This representation of various voices in the anti-psychiatry movement is
recommended for anyone with a professional or personal interest in the
life and treatment of those identified as mentally ill.
