Review

In this companion volume to Faith in My Neighbour: World Religions in
Canada (1994), readers are introduced to the faith traditions of 24
contributors who have taken the “risk of self-knowledge” by sharing
their stories and distinct traditional practices. In communicating
everything from Aboriginal, Jewish, and Muslim legends to Mennonite
parables and Caribbean traditions such as Shango, these believers give
voice to their experiences of personal and cosmic spaces and to the
relations that have helped to forge their personal belief systems. Each
personal testimony is followed by a thumbnail sketch of the faith in a
Canadian context.

“[W]e live in a culture where religious experience is highly
psychologized,” editor Susan L. Scott writes, “and in our efforts to
find a sophisticated vocabulary for interiority, we sometimes forget
that the simplest words convey the most common and profound
experiences.” The stories that make up this volume are inspirational
expressions of “the most common and profound experiences.” Highly
recommended.
