Review

This readable guide provides prospective applicants with sound advice
for choosing a graduate program based both on long-term career goals and
on realistically assessing the likelihood of admission. Specific
strategies relating to everything from transcripts and letters of
reference to interviews are described in detail. Although concise
guidelines are provided, the book lacks concrete examples that might be
useful for those who are new to the process of graduate school
admission; nonetheless, to help the novice, the author does identify
common mistakes made in graduate school applications. Perhaps his
book’s most valuable resource is a checklist of strategies that
students can use, beginning in their freshman year, to increase their
chances of admission to graduate studies.

Notwithstanding Mumby’s dubious claim that grade point averages in
the B range are sufficient for entry into graduate school, this book is
a useful resource for would-be applicants.
