Review
How many times, the author asks, have we passed by a church in the
Ottawa valley, either on a country road or main highway, and wondered
whether it was a going concern or what the inside looked like. This
book, his answer to that question, covers 70 churches, both large and
small, in Arnprior, Pembroke, Renfrew, Smiths Falls, Merrickville,
Oxford Mills, Pakenham, and many more towns and villages in between.
Morrison attended Roman Catholic Masses, Baptist revivals, a
Presbyterian Kirkin ’O’ the Tartan, and a Southern Gospel Evening
concert at a Pentecostal Tabernacle Church. For each church, he provides
historical background, architectural details, and a drawing of the
church exterior. The fact that he has taken the time to discover what
these congregations are doing today makes his book more than just
another history.
