Review

This handsomely produced book is an annotated bibliography of Italian
literature in English between 1929 and 1997 (an appendix extends the
list to 1998). The book includes illustrations of book covers and book
jackets of 12 books, from the Modern Age Kooks publication of Ignazio
Silone’s Fontamara (1938) to the Pocket Books publication of Giovanni
Guareschi’s Comrade Don Camillo (1965). In addition to a very helpful
introduction, there are author and translator indexes.

Arranged in alphabetical order according to the book’s author, this
annotated bibliography spans all fields of cultural endeavor—novel,
theatre, poetry, short story, history, philosophy, memoir, opera. Each
entry contains a reference number, the author’s full name, the title
of the book, the date of its first publication in Italian, the title of
the English translation, the names of the translator and editor, the
date of publication in English, and notes on the author, the book, and
the sources of the data.

This book makes a valuable contribution to the field of Italian
studies.
