Review

This first novel by Vancouver writer Lizard Jones is a product of the
1995 International 3-Day Novel Competition.

Rusty is a thirty-something lesbian with multiple sclerosis, a
sometimes-annoying girlfriend, a physical need to sleep a lot, and a
very active fantasy life. In between reading Ms Magazine (and screaming
with laughter at the advertisements for mobility aids featuring
traditional nuclear families) and collecting disability cheques, Rusty
struggles to build a freelance writing career. Her “affair” with a
character named Dee leaves the reader wondering how much is fantasy and
how much, reality. The relationship between Rusty and her partner,
Janet, is handled with humor and pathos.

Jones’s quick wit and firsthand knowledge of multiple sclerosis make
this novel both entertaining and informative.
