Review

In researching this book, Hockey Night in Canada broadcasters Chris
Cuthbert and Scott Russell went on an “odyssey through Canada’s
hockey heartland.” From St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Trail, British
Columbia, they visited 12 hockey rinks and interviewed some 200 people.
Each of the rinks has a special significance in its community. For
example, the Stannus Street rink, built in Windsor, Nova Scotia, in
1897, claims to be the oldest standing ice rink in the country.

Black-and-white photographs of NHL players in their early amateur days
are included in this readable grassroots portrait of hockey in Canada.
It deserves a place in public-library collections.
