Review

This wonderful guide to canoeing in Ontario will appeal to paddlers and
armchair explorers alike.

The book covers 15 routes, which are accompanied by helpful maps
indicating camping spots, portages, rapids, chutes, dams, and logistical
sites. Callan tours Ontario’s crown jewels—the French River,
Killarney, Algonquin Park, and Temagami—but also introduces the
lesser-known charms and challenges of the Magnetawan, the Missinaibi,
and the Spanish Rivers. As well, he gives timely warnings about the
dangers of Lake Superior.

Up the Creek is loaded with photographs of intrepid paddlers forging
through gorges or cruising fir-ringed lakes. The text is further
enlivened by personal anecdotes and by fascinating snippets of history
and Native folklore.

This book bridges the gap between Callan’s Cottage Country Canoe
Routes and Hap Wilson’s monumental Temagami Canoe Routes.
