Review

Kevin Callan is the author of two canoeing books and is also a popular
speaker on nature and canoeing. In this highly readable book, he shares
his extensive exploration of Algonquin Park’s waterways.

Twenty canoeing trips within the park are highlighted. We learn about
the Barron Canyon route, which will appeal to anyone interested in
100-metre cliff-lined waterways. The eight- to ten-day Nipissing loop
will take readers to rapids, falls, and tranquil beaches. The text,
which is supported by detailed maps, includes practical information
(time, difficulty, and portage distances) and useful tips.

Callan’s description of each route reflects an awareness of the
drawbacks of human impact as well as the delights of the natural world.
His book allows readers to experience vicariously the wilderness of
Algonquin Park and would serve as an ideal companion on explorations of
the area.
