Review

Rosalyn has a Hallowe’cn problem (her little-girl costume is so realistic that people think she is not dressed up and refuse to give her treats), and a Christmas problem (Uncle Keith, a kangaroo, sends a pair of skates as a present, instead of two pairs to cover all four feet). Both of these stories present familiar celebrations from the rabbit’s point of view. Who could resist Rosalyn sleeping with her wrapped-up present beside her bed, so she could pat it every day? The third story is Matilda Mouse’s problem in getting food home to her babies. Rosalyn solves this problem, too, with her friend’s help. In each story, Rosalyn’s human friend is called “the little girl,” which allows more involvement for little listeners. The stories are lavishly illustrated by William C. Tobin, full of the kind of detail that children like best. The whole effect is charming.
