Review

This book is a collection of black-and-white drawings by Helmut Hirnschall, with complementary descriptions by Chief Dan George, some poetry, some prose. My Spirit Soars is the second collaboration between Dan George and Hirnschall.

Chief Dan George, whose career started as a west coast longshoreman, became chief of his Salish Reserve, then entered on a career of radio and film, to win an Academy Award mention in 1971 as best supporting actor in Little Big Man.

The title My Spirit Soars was chosen by Hirnschall, who was deeply moved at the time of Dan George’s burial, 1981, when an eagle soared over the open grave.
