Review

Later Stages is a collection of essays that covers a wide spectrum of
topics having to do with theatre in Ontario from 1914 to the 1970s. The
book is divided into nine sections. Eight of these (Professional
Performers and Companies, Variety, Summer Festivals and Theatres,
Amateur Theatre, University Theatre, Plays and Playwrights, Theatrical
Design, Theatre Criticism) provide a historical perspective, while one
(Resources for Theatre History) represents a guide for novice
researchers. The essays are solidly written, academic yet accessible.
The notes are comprehensive, and most of the essays are accompanied by
illustrations.

Ann Saddlemyer and Richard Plant have done a commendable job as
editors, ensuring that the individual essays complement each other while
at the same time standing on their own. This book would be a worthwhile
addition to any theatre history library.
