Review

“With my hands gripped around the coffee cup so tightly I’m in
danger of snapping it, I contemplate the fact that I have a brutal
headache, an impending work project deadline, a spectacular sense of my
family spinning out of control—and some tuna in the cupboard to redo
the lunch.”

In the style of Erma Bombeck, Judith Timson, writer, wife, and mother
of two young children, takes a look at human frailties and the humorous
side of family life. Her book, which combines new material with essays
that originally appeared in Chatelaine magazine, explores the demands of
parenthood, marriage, and work.

When talking of her children, Timson delves into the world of
overprotectiveness, musical beds, and ultimate birthday parties. The
topic of marriage has her sharing information on domestic rhythm and
temporary house husbands. Elsewhere she reflects on subjects ranging
from racism to Gay Pride Day.

These short, readable, and entertaining essays provide a welcome
respite from life’s everyday demands.
