Review

This book, whose arrangement is loosely based on the calendar year,
consists of a collection of short pieces from The Globe and Mail’s
“Social Studies” column. If you like the column, you will love the
book. The author, who is reputed to have no life apart from the endless
hours he spends buried away in dusty archives or hunched over a
flickering computer screen, has compiled weird and wonderful factoids on
every conceivable subject and human folly. Be it the British Fancy Rat
Association, tips on how to relax a pig, or the secrets of professional
wrestling, it can all be found here. Billed as “[b]rain snacks for
busy, brilliant minds,” The Twelve Best Months of the Year is the
perfect book for the bathroom or the train station.
