Review

A Western Doctor’s Odyssey is a pleasing account of the author’s
early years in medicine. The bulk of the memoir is devoted to the time
he spent as a family practitioner serving the community of Hazelton,
B.C. The members of that community, whom he found “as interesting as
[Hazelton’s] history,” included residents from eight nearby Native
villages, along with the descendants of Asian miners and of pioneering
families. Dr. Lee, who went on to become an obstetrician, was deeply
affected by his experiences in this remote community, where he was
called upon to treat everything from minor infections to bullet wounds.
