Review

Winging it has been a way of life for Lyn Hancock. Her adventuring began
with wildlife surveys and filming in northern British Columbia, the
Yukon, and Alaska. She made numerous trips to the Northwest Territories
and eventually made Fort Simpson her home base.

Driving the Dempster highway before it was officially open, walking the
Canol Trail, playing golf at Eureka, tracking wolves at Bathurst Inlet,
joining North Pole adventurers on their departure from
Resolute—Hancock has done a bit of everything. Her book also tells you
what it’s like to sit in a teepee and eat raw caribou or to sleep in
an igloo and tend a seal oil lamp.

This is the North at its most glamorous and spellbinding. Ignored are
the social challenges communities face: alcoholism, drug addiction, and
family violence. It’s no wonder Hancock

has been described as an ambassador for the North; she does that job
extremely well.
