Review

This exhibit catalogue comes from the June 7-July 22, 1984, show, drawn from the gallery’s collections, donations, and loans. Most of the prints were donated by Isabel Pollard. The text illuminates the rich printmaking history and tradition of Japan and provides a good commentary for the 68 prints (reproduced here in black and white only) from the 40 artists. There are also some notes on the artists’ work styles and life activities. A wide range of themes is covered: many of them are Christian and mythological (from Japanese history), but some are more mundane, such as social and household activities. The various media include silk screen, woodblock, wood engraving, lithograph, etching, copperplate, and “mixed.”
