Review

Given the subject matter, a splendid book was required. Fortunately, one was forthcoming in this handsome tribute to Canada’s Gateway, The Gulf of St. Lawrence. Ringed by five of the ten provinces, the Gulf is many things to many people: a place to live, a medium in which to work, an obstacle that must be overcome, or a panorama of natural beauty whose grandeur can only be suggested in even the loveliest of photographs. Yet what can be done by a camera has been brilliantly done here; it is left to the reader to supply the sounds, smells and feel of it all. Harry Bruce’s brief introduction suggests the far-reaching history of the area, longest recorded in our country’s annals. The rest is provided in glowing colour through page after page of jewel-like photography. A bibliography is appended, as well as an Index of Places.
