Review

Gordon Rice is a contemporary West Coast artist who has rejected the magnificent British Columbia vistas in favour of the suburban landscape. His favourite subjects are people-oriented and include such mundane scenes as neighbourhood backyards and porches. Rice works in both watercolour and, more recently, collage. He has begun to use the photocopier, a technique that has provided many new possibilities for collage work.

This brief but attractive catalogue was designed to accompany an exhibition of Rice’s works held at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Most of the 65 pictures included in the show were painted in the last two or three years, although several date from the middle or late seventies. The catalogue contains thirteen reproductions of the works in the show, five of those in colour, as well as a list of all of the paintings involved. A brief biography of the artist and a list of his work experience and his previous exhibitions is appended. Patricia Bovey, director of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, has provided an introduction and Greg Bellerby, chief curator, has written an introduction that places Rice’s work in perspective and provides information about its technical aspects.
