Review

This book looks like and feels like one of those quality Random House or Knopf books, right down to the dustjacket, “A Note on the Type” at the back, and the ragged edges of the opened pages. The material is mainly from American periodicals, covering 1960 to 1984. The 19 essays, about different aspects of Canadian life, have been drawn from the archives of Atlantic Monthly, Harpers, Life, Esquire, New York, New York Times Magazine, New York Times Book Review, Encounter Geo, and others. Just for balance there are essays from the United Kingdom (Spectator; New Statesman) and Canada (Saturday Night, Maclean’s, The Canadian, etc.). It is good to have all of these Richler essays immediately accessible within one cover.
