Review

This unique account of a young German covers his early life before World War II, his experience in the German navy as a draftee, and his horrifying description of the merciless concentration camp routine which he managed to survive for nine months as a prisoner.

It is the true story of an idealistic young man caught in the wartime Nazi machinery. The description of his miraculous escape from the concentration camp is more gripping than most dramatic fiction. How he managed to flee from Germany into France and join the Resistance is an unusual story, indicative of the ingenuity that he had to display in order to survive. The courage of his convictions eventually led him to England, where he joined British Intelligence shortly after the liberation of France. As a British spy, he ventured behind enemy lines back into Germany, impersonating a German soldier.

Written in collaboration with two others, this compelling story of courage, determination, and luck gives an amazing behind-the-scenes glimpse of a hapless young German caught and almost destroyed, like his country, by the Nazis and the evil genius of their leader. It makes fascinating reading!
