Review

This book is an update of former Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster
Brian McFarlane’s out-of-print biography of the former Toronto Maple
Leaf defenceman King Clancy, who died in November 1986. McFarlane spent
four years interviewing Clancy, whose reminiscences focus on his career
as a player, referee, coach, and executive. Also examined are Clancy’s
friendship with Harold Ballard and his life as husband and father. King
Clancy comes across as a flawed but fun-loving Irish Catholic who
happened to be a top defenceman.

The text is enhanced by 16 black-and-white photographs. A detailed
table of contents partly makes up for the lack of an index. Recommended
for library collections.
