Review

Arthur Bishop has produced a substantial number of books on Canada’s
military heritage, all extolling the national record and Canadian
heroes. Salute!, a study of “Canada’s great military leaders from
Brock to Dextraze,” however, is not one of his best. The research is
almost all potted, pried from existing books. Neither the author nor the
publisher proofread the book, or so it appears, and the dozens of
mistakes of fact and typography will undoubtedly frustrate everyone who
knows the field.

Still, the individual essays read briskly, with de Salaberry, Currie,
and Dextraze perhaps coming off best in terms of leadership and military
skill. The only profile that seems slightly out of place is that of an
air force officer Bishop served under during World War II. Air Vice
Marshal Keith Hodson clearly was an able officer, but regrettably his
early death meant that he does not merit inclusion. This is no book for
specialists, but it may get students interested in Canadian military
history.
