Review

Wild Waters provides a striking record of North America’s thousands of
kilometres of untamed wilderness rivers. Nine illustrated essays by
canoeists and naturalists take readers on trips down nine rivers,
including the Moisie in Quebec, the Nahanni in the northwest, and the
Owyhee, which flows through Oregon’s remote canyonlands.

In a foreword, Bill Mason writes of the unique personality of each
river: “A river is a living being that can speak to the soul or the
spirit. ... I might never get to many or most of those rivers, but
knowing they are out there, wild and free, fills me with anticipation
and excitement.” Editor James Raffan, a white-water instructor,
wilderness guide, writer, and strong environmentalist, warns of the
increasing environmental hazards threatening wild rivers.

Wild Waters, which includes some stunning photos, is recommended for
canoeists and armchair adventurers.
