Review

Lone Pine’s latest Pocket Guide features 23 of the most popular
dayhikes near Banff. Its author is an experienced hiker who has hiked
all of the trails and thoroughly enjoyed each one. In the first 20 pages
of the volume, she offers advice to hikers on everything from “what to
wear” to “aggressive wildlife.” The rest of the book contains
trail descriptions grouped by proximity to the Banff townsite.

In each four- to six-page trail description, Elton details the
route’s scenery, vegetation, and potential dangers and includes a
topographic map. The guide’s overall design is attractive (a number of
eye-catching techniques have been used), and the photographic
reproduction is excellent.

Since Banff is a major Canadian tourist destination, this hiking guide
should be included in any library with a travel literature collection,
even though it is primarily designed for the consumer market.
