Review

Tell el Hesi, located in south Israel, has been occupied at various times from the Early Bronze Age through to the military trenching of 1948. Toombs analyzes the Islamic cemetery on the site (1600 to 1800 AD.). He develops a typology of burials from a computer analysis of burial cysts, skeletal data, and grave goods. There are 80 pictures of individual burials, as well as tables, plans, and section drawings to complement the text. In the back pocket of the book are four inserts for location maps. A book of limited appeal, but obviously one of immense value to archaeologists and anthropologists interested in burial customs.
